![]() The character's two-prong visor, intended to convey speed and agility, was inspired by BMX helmets. The Chief's armor went through various changes, such as green tint, and the addition (and later removal) of an antenna. When the sketch was translated into a three-dimensional model, the team felt that it looked too slim and anime-inspired, and Lehto asked for a bulkier character design that felt more like a walking tank. Shi Kai Wang was later hired as a concept artist, who created a sketch that became the basis for Master Chief. When game studio Bungie began developing Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), the design of Master Chief was led by art director Marcus Lehto with support from artist Robert McLees. While publications have praised how the narrative allows players to inhabit the character, others have criticized him as under characterized.Ĭharacter design Shi Kai Wang's preliminary sketch of the Master Chief in Halo: Combat Evolved Art direction The character has received a generally positive reception for his character design. ![]() The Master Chief has been seen as a mascot for Halo and the Xbox brand. ![]() In spin-off media, he is portrayed by different voice and physical actors, most notably Pablo Schreiber in the 2022 live-action Halo TV series. ![]() In the video games, the character is voiced by former disc jockey Steve Downes, who based his performance on Bungie's description calling for a man of few words, similar to Clint Eastwood. The designers intended for players to be able to project their own intentions into the character, and thus reduced his voiced lines and concealed his appearance under his armor. The Master Chief is a towering supersoldier known as a " Spartan", trained from childhood for combat. The character also appears in spin-off Halo media such as the 2012 film Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, the 2022 Halo television series, and several graphic novels and books. Also known as Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, the character first appeared in the 2001 video game Halo: Combat Evolved, a military science fiction first-person shooter that became a long-running game series. Now that there is artwork out there of Master Chief with cat ears, though, perhaps that will sway the stance on them, for better or for worse. In one hand they are a neat accessory that exemplify the type of cosmetics that belong in the item shop, while in the other, they contradict (for many) what Halo armor should look like artistically. Halo Infinite players have been mixed on the cat ears ever since they were discovered. There are likely many more pieces like this within the Art of Halo Infinite, the game's official collection of concept materials and art. To the side are examples of the cat ears themselves, unattached to Master Chief, with captions explaining how they will connect to various other helmets, and the usage of familiar shapes already present in Master Chief's armor.Ī common practice within game development in the conceptual phase is after nailing a basic design, the artist will model it and see how it looks against other game assets. In the image posted by DeltaArchive on Twitter, the typically stoic yet occasionally dry-witted Master Chief can be seen in three shots wearing the Purrfect Audio attachment, referred to as simply the "Cat Ears Accessory" on the page. RELATED: Halo Infinite Cat Ears Are EverywhereA member of the Halo Infinite community has shared concept art revealing an official look of the cat ears attachment on Master Chief. In-game the cat ears are an Epic Helmet Attachment titled "Purrfect Audio," its description simply being "Anthropomjolnir," a doubling down by 343 Industries on the cat puns. When the multiplayer beta launched in November, Halo Infinite players were spotting bots wearing the cat ears helmet attachment, the bots being appropriately named "Meowlnir." When the item eventually came to the store, they became very popular as Spartans in practically every game lobby were wearing them. It appears that while designing them, 343 Industries at one point tested them on Master Chief, a new piece of Halo Infinite concept art showing as such.Players knew about the cat ears cosmetic way in advance of its official reveal at the end of December. A few weeks ago, Halo Infinite featured a cat ears cosmetic item that quickly became seen on many players' Spartans. ![]()
